Serenity in the Apocalypse by Nare Joo

A series of large-scale oil paintings exploring surreal dreamscapes as a way of visualising contemporary anxiety, instability, and emotional fragmentation.

Through distorted figures, vivid colour palettes, and layered painterly spaces, the works transform the canvas into a multidimensional psychological environment shaped by uncertainty and imagination.

Drawing from her diaspora background, Nare’s paintings reconstruct fragmented dream imagery through ambiguous forms and fluid visual narratives. Rather than offering an escape from reality, the works actively confront the instability of the present moment.

My piece delves into the surreal and illogical landscapes of dreams as a way to visualise contemporary anxiety and chaos.

The project emerged from reflections on the current global climate, particularly the experience of witnessing war, violence, and unrest through news and social media. As the work developed through sketches and conversations with close friends, emotional storytelling became increasingly central to the paintings.

I infused emotional narratives into the pieces, heavily drawing from non-visual mediums. I have always actively embraced the influence of non-visual arts, such as literature and music, in my practice.

The collection consists of six oil paintings on stretched canvas with artist’s frames, ranging from small to large paintings, installed across two large walls. The paintings create an immersive visual environment while still encouraging viewers to engage closely with each individual work.

What distinguishes Nare’s practice is the development of a highly personal artistic language throughout her studies, combining surreal and dreamlike imagery with deeply subjective interpretations.

This openness allows audiences to experience the work through their own emotional and imaginative perspectives, rather than searching for a singular meaning or narrative.

Reflecting on the process of creating the project, Nare described it as an important turning point in the development of her artistic practice and future career:

“This project serves as a crucial stepping stone for my artist career,” she said. “Through this process, my world has expanded vastly, opening up new horizons.”
