Priority group engagement

Find out how our Access and Participation team supports students from our priority groups, including mature students, care-experienced and estranged students, and refugees.

Primary page content

Our team does bespoke work with groups of students who face additional barriers to accessing higher education. This work is targeted at:

Care-Leavers and Refugees

Any student who has spent time living with foster carers under local authority care, in residential care (e.g. a children’s home), looked after at home under a supervision order, or in kinship care with relatives or friends, either officially (e.g. a special guardianship order) or informally without local authority support. We also offer additional support for estranged students who come to study at Goldsmiths.

We also offer access support for students who have experience as either a refugee or asylum-seeker.

Free School Meals or Pupil Premium

Students who receive free school meals consistently face higher barriers to accessing higher education than other students. As such, we aim to partner with local schools with demonstrably high numbers of students on free school meals to ensure activities like our Discover Gold visits reach the students who would benefit most from knowledge about the available pathways after they finish compulsory education.

Mature students and those returning to HE after a break from education

Mature students constitute any learner who is over the age of 21 at the start of their Undergraduate programme. This group encompasses a wide range of abilities and experiences. We are happy to work with adult education providers to create bespoke activities aimed at encouraging these students to participate in higher education or to provide information, advice and guidance to education providers about the options available for mature students and adult learners to access higher education.
