The painter was shortlisted for the , continuing Goldsmiths' long association with the award.

In total nine Goldsmiths graduates have won the award since it was launched in 1984, including Damian Hirst and Steve McQueen, with nearly 30 alumni shortlisted for the prestigious prize.

Mohammed graduated from Goldsmiths with a Masters in Fine Art in 2018.

Born in Baghdad, Mr Sami lived under Saddam Hussain’s dictatorship, experiencing the Iran-Iraq conflict, two Gulf Wars and the US-led invasion with the ensuing sectarian violence. These experiences have shaped his work –paintings devoid of human figures on large scale canvasses.

The paintings seek to capture the state of confusion that occurs because of the cut thread between realists and the imagination; between war narrated and war witnessed.
