Ten years ago, the first Young Writer competition for creative writing ran, encouraging young people with a passion for the written word to submit their short stories. Since then, other subjects have also been included, such as the Young Anthropologist competition for those interested in issues of identity and culture.

Young Writer winners in previous years have attended the prize ceremony for the Goldsmiths Prize, giving the authors of tomorrow a chance to meet innovative writers whose novels experiment with the form.

This year, three competitions are running, offering young people the chance to participate through either submitting a thousand-word creative writing story, a thousand-word anthropology essay or a thousand-word science communications blog post.

Those who register for the competitions will be invited to participate in online workshops, hosted by our academic staff, that will aim to bolster their writing skills and give them a taste of how these subjects are taught at Goldsmiths.

Young Psychologist

New this year, future psychologists can participate in a competition which asks them to prepare a thousand-word science communications blog post. They will need to reference at least one scientific paper, and include at least one image or graphic to help illustrate their message. The prompt they will need to respond to is revealed on signing up.

This task mirrors a science communications assignment Psychology students undertake, so young people can get a taste of what studying a social science might be like.

It's great that we are launching the Young Psychologist competition this year, as it marks also the Young Writer Competitions celebrating their tenth anniversary. It's an important milestone and the perfect moment to add a Psychology strand.

Dr Rebecca Chamberlain

Dr Rebecca Chamberlain, lecturer in the School of Mind, Body and Society, added "We're excited to introduce a different style of writing as an option for young people who are interested in social sciences. I'm looking forward to reading the responses, and wish good luck to everyone who submits an entry."

The three competitions are open to UK students aged 16-18 by the deadline. The closing date for entries is the 16 April 2027.

Past Young Writer and Young Anthropologist winning stories and essays can be read on our website.
