Accepted financial documents
The purpose of financial evidence is to show that you – or your parents, guardians, or financial sponsor – can afford to pay for the cost of your studies, including tuition, accommodation, and general living costs such as food, utilities, travel and leisure while studying in the UK.

There are strict requirements for the funding amounts and forms of evidence accepted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). If the financial documents you provide don't meet these requirements, your application will be rejected. This is the most common reason for student visa refusals, so make sure you understand and follow these rules.
There are different types of documents you can provide as financial evidence, depending on how you are funding your studies. You may use a combination of these, as long as they cover the full amount of funding when added together.
Accepted financial documents
Please note, that you can only use bank statements in your own name, or in the name of your parents/legal guardians. It’s fine to use a joint account, in your name, and the name of any other person – but we advise that you obtain a signed consent letter from them, clarifying that they have no objections to you using the funds in the joint account for your studies in the UK.
The bank statement can be printed on official stationery, or it can be an electronic record. It cannot be handwritten.
All bank statements must be in English or must be accompanied by an official translation.
Requirements
Each bank statement must contain
- Your name or the name of your parent/s
- The date of issue (if you are using more than one bank account, all bank account statements must have the same date of issue and cover the same 28-day period to show that funds have been held concurrently/at the same time)
- The name and official logo of the bank
- Information about the bank (for example, contact details or the branch code)
- Account number
- Currency
- A running/daily balance column (if the bank cannot add this to your statement, then you will need to provide a bank letter in addition to the bank statement, clarifying the minimum balance in the account in the 28-day period shown on the statement)
It also must:
- Show the balance on each day over the 28-day period (UKVI will use the most recent transaction on your bank statement and count back 28 days)
- Have a closing balance/last transaction no more than 31 days before you plan to make your visa applicationHave at least 2 or 3 transactions (however small) in the 28-day period (this demonstrates that the account is active and in use)
- Have at least 2 or 3 transactions (however small) in the 28-day period (this demonstrates that the account is active and in use)
- Show that the minimum balance in the account never drops below the required minimum account balance for your student visa application (tuition plus living costs). If the balance drops below the minimum account balance required, then the 28-day period will reset
If the funds are in your local currency, please check and include the exchange rate on the .
If you are self-financed and using your parents' bank statement for your visa application, you must meet the same guidelines as stated above and in addition you must also provide the following:
- Your original birth certificate
- A letter of parental consent (from the account holder) confirming that this money will be used for your studies and you have your parent/guardian’s consent to use this money for this purpose
For more information on those documents see the Additional documents section at the bottom of the page.
The letter must be clearly dated and no more than 31 days old when you submit your Student visa application online.
The letter must state the minimum balance held in the account for the same 28-day period shown on the bank statement. Please ensure that you have held the correct amount of money in your account and that you have held it for at least 28 consecutive days.
The funds must be able to be accessed at any time (please ask the bank to confirm on the document that the money is immediately accessible).
The letter should also include all the following information
- Account holder information (your name or your parents’ name)
- The account number
- The bank’s name and contact details or the branch code
- The date of issue of the letter (please ensure that this is dated on the same day as your bank statement)
- The bank logo and/or letterhead
- Signed by a bank official
Fixed deposits can be used to evidence your funds, provided that they are immediately accessible and you can provide sufficient documentation.
We would accept
- An original Fixed deposit receipt + bank letter (certificate of deposit). Original Fixed deposit receipts (from when the account was first opened) should be accompanied by a bank letter (sometimes known as a certificate of deposit). If you are using more than one fixed deposit account, the certificate of deposit/bank letter can list all of the accounts being used if they are from the same bank and the required funds have been held in the accounts for 28 days concurrently, but you would need to provide the original receipt for each account
To be acceptable as evidence, the bank letter/certificate of deposit must meet the following criteria
- It must have been issued within 31 days of the date of your visa application.
- At least 28 days must have elapsed between the date of the deposit on the original deposit receipt and the date of issue of the letter/certificate to show that the funds have been held for 28 days
- It must state the minimum balance/amount held in the account in the 28-day period, and this must meet your student visa financial requirements
- The funds can be accessed at any time (are accessible)
- It must include the name of the account holder
- It must include the account number
- It must have information about the bank (for example, contact details or the branch code)
- It must show the date in which the money was deposited into the account
If you are sponsored by a recognised financial sponsor, you will need a letter from the relevant provider to include in your visa application.
Recognised financial sponsors include the UK government, your country's government, the British Council, international organisations, international companies, and universities.
The sponsorship letter must be issued within the last six months before your visa application.
The letter must usually include
- the date
- the name of your scholarship provider
- contact details of your scholarship provider
- the name of your chosen course
- the length of your scholarship (for example, the number of months or the course dates)
- the amount of money the scholarship provider is giving you or a statement that they will cover all your tuition fees and living costs
In case the sponsorship does not cover the full tuition fees and living expenses, you will need to provide additional financial evidence showing that you can cover the difference between what you are receiving and what you need to show for visa purposes.
If you have a scholarship from Goldsmiths, you do not need a sponsorship letter from us as this information will be confirmed on your CAS instead.
If you have an educational loan to cover the cost of your studies, you can use this to meet the financial evidence requirements.
To be acceptable as evidence of funds, the loan must be in your name and provided by your government (state, regional, or national), or be through a government-sponsored student loan company or educational loans scheme. You cannot use any other form of loan for your Student visa application.
It must be dated within the last six months before your visa application submission date.
To use your loan in a visa application, you must provide a letter from the loan provider which includes
- Your name
- The date of the letter
- The name and logo of the institution providing the loan
- Confirmation that the money is available to you as a loan
- Confirmation that the loan is provided by a government, or through a government-sponsored student loan company educational loans scheme
- The letter needs to confirm that the financial institution that has issued the loan is regulated by the official regulatory body for the country the institution is in and where the money is held
